Production of referring expressions and computational psycholinguistics

Referring expressions (“the green chair”, “this man”, “he”) are ubiquitous in human communication, but how human speakers produce these expressions, and how computers could automatically generate them, are still open questions. In my Vici project, computational modeling techniques are combined with experimental studies to try and answer these questions. Earlier I was a visiting fellow in the TUNA EPSRC project (Brighton/Aberdeen), run by Kees van Deemter, which focussed on the computational generation of referring expressions.
